Who are we?
Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center’s Department of Dentistry offers the most comprehensive oral health care services for patients with physical and developmental disabilities in the State of Illinois. Our Special Patient Care Dental Program provides quality affordable care to adults and children alike, some travelling significant distances.

We have four decades of experience providing services to these patients and are being considered a model for oral health best practices by the American Dental Association. Our program provides unique training in treating this underserved population to our General Practice Dental Residents, and soon to our Dental Anesthesiology Residents, and instills in them the skills and compassion to continue such care post residency, ultimately creating more clinics that offer care to patients with disabilities.

Who do we serve?
More than 1,500 patients with developmental disabilities visit our compassionate experts each year through our Special Patient Care Dental Program, but there is currently an 8 month wait. Outside of our clinic, an estimated 1,300 patients are waiting up to 2 years for advanced dental anesthesiology at the nearest comparable care facility.

  • The larger public health challenge:
  • There is a lack of oral health care providers in the State who offer comprehensive care to patients with physical and/or developmental disabilities due to several factors, including but not limited to:
    • Lack of Dentist Anesthesiologists (only 7 Accredited Dental Anesthesiology Residency Programs in the US)
    • Competition for time in Operating Rooms (ORs)
    • High cost for provider, and very poor reimbursement from Medicaid, in the use of ORs
    • Cost of retrofitting a dental clinic to support care for patients with disabilities for a high cost service with a high number of patients uninsured or underinsured
    • General lack of education and skill in offering dental care to patients with disabilities
  • To do more, we need more funding:
    • Annual operating costs for Special Patient Care Dentistry are $580,000
    • An estimated 95% of our Special Patient Care Dental patients are covered by Medicaid
    • Medicaid and traditional insurance cover less than 50% of operating costs
    • Additional costs for this program are dependent on philanthropy

Why does your partnership matter?
  • Your philanthropic support will help us in many ways, including:
    • To expand the annual program capacity enabling us to care for 250 new patients and reduce the wait time for services by half over the next 3 years.
    • To cover purchases of additional equipment and build out 2 outpatient dental operatories to serve patients with special needs. These newly equipped operatories will have an immediate impact by supporting up to 3 to 4 new deep sedation/ general anesthesia cases weekly, increasing capacity to 6 weekly cases by the end of 2022.
    • The Special Needs Dentistry Program expansion will provide new opportunities to connect children with special needs to dental care at an early age. AIMMC’s Pediatric Developmental Center (PDC) will be a significant partner for program expansion. The PDC serves nearly 2,500 unique patients annually and is known for autism treatment services.
